Minister Zhu Qin Attends the Launch of Air China London-Chengdu Direct Flight

On July 3, Minister Zhu Qin attended and addressed the launch of Air China London-Chengdu Direct Flight. About 100 people from various sectors of China and the UK were present, including Li Yunchuan, General Manager of Air China Southwest Branch Company, Guy Stephenson, Chief Commercial Officer of Gatwick Airport, Chen Hongbing, General Manager of Air China London Office and representatives from Chengdu.

Minister Zhu extended his warmest congratulations on the launch of Air China direct flight between London and Chengdu, and noted that the significance of the event is three-fold: First, it signifies the building of a new bridge for China-UK people-to-people and cultural exchanges. As the “Golden Era” has been shifted into a higher gear, the growing number of direct flights between China and the UK is a great facilitation for closer people-to-people exchanges. Second, this new route opens a “silk road by air” for China-UK cooperation. Chengdu was the starting point of the Southern Silk Road in ancient times. This year marks the 5th anniversary of the Belt and Road Initiative. The launch of London-Chengdu flight reflects the confidence of Chinese companies in the future of the UK. It will also help take China-UK cooperation on the BRI onto a new level. Third, this new route strengthens the bond between Chinese and British people. The direct flight, as well as the culture, sights and food, will draw more and more tourists to London and Chengdu, which will surely help build closer bond between the people of the two countries.

General Manager Li Yunchuan said that Air China will follow the footsteps of Belt and Road Initiative, continue to actively promote the trade, industrial cooperation, tourism and people-to-people and cultural exchanges between West China, Sichuan included, and the UK, by opening new routes.

Stephenson said that, he is looking forward to strengthening cooperation with Air China to contribute to the economic development and people-to-people and cultural exchanges between China and the UK.

Air China is the only Chinese airlines on the list of the World’s 500 Most Influential Brands. The new route between Chengdu and London-Gatwick, operated under flight numbers CA423/4 three times a week, is the 30th Air China direct flight to Europe.
