Embassy Spokesperson's letter to the Financial Times on unjustified comments on airlines changing website wording in reference to Taiwan
2018/06/29

Ms. Zeng Rong, Spokesperson of the Chinese Embassy in the UK, recently wrote a letter to the Financial Times about the unjustified comments carried in a letter published in the newspaper with regard to airlines changing website wording on Taiwan. The Financial Times published the letter on 28 June 2018, the full text of which is as follows:

The letter from Tony Phillips (June 21) made unjustified and misleading comments on cross-Strait relations.

There is only one China in the world and Taiwan is an inseparable part of China. This is an objective fact, as well as the general consensus of the international community. The way Taiwan is referred to on airlines websites is not a general procedural or technical matter but an important issue of principle concerning China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Requiring changes to relevant wording is totally legal and legitimate. All companies operating in China should follow the one-China principle, abide by the Chinese laws and regulations and respect the sentiments of the Chinese people. This is not an undue requirement.
