On March 2, Ambassador Liu Xiaoming met with Sir George Iacobescu CBE, Chairman and CEO of Canary Wharf Group, and exchanged views with him on China-UK cooperation and the project in Xiong'an New Area in particular.

Ambassador Liu said that Prime Minister May's successful visit to China had achieved fruitful results. The leaders of the two countries reaffirmed their commitment to building a more strategic, practical, global and inclusive China-UK relationship in the "Golden Era", which sets the direction for future development between the two countries. The Ambassador congratulated the Canary Wharf Group on signing the cooperation agreement with Bank of China and China Xiong'an Construction & Investment Group, witnessed by Chinese Premier Li Keqiang and visiting British Prime Minister May. He said that the establishment of the Xiong'an New Area is a major historic and strategic decision made by the Chinese government and "a major project of the Millennium and a major national event" for China. It is of great significance to advancing the coordinated development of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region and cultivating a new engine for innovation-driven development. At the same time, it also creates new opportunities for China-UK cooperation. He hoped the Canary Wharf Group would seize the historical opportunities to deepen cooperation with China, achieve win-win situation, and contribute "Golden Fruits" to China-UK "Golden Era".
