President Ram Nath Kovind of India Meets with Wang Yi
2018/12/21

On December 21, 2018 local time, President Ram Nath Kovind of India met at Rashtrapati Bhavan (the State House) with State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi, who was attending the first meeting of China-India High-level People-to-People and Cultural Exchanges Mechanism.

Ram Nath Kovind asked Wang Yi to convey his warm greetings to President Xi Jinping. He said that relations with China are an important direction of India's foreign policy. Since the Wuhan meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping, bilateral relations have made positive progress. People-to-people and cultural exchanges are an important part of India-China relations and also an important force in promoting the development of bilateral relations. India and China are two ancient civilizations and important neighboring countries. The Indian side is willing to maintain high-level exchanges with the Chinese side, deepen mutual exchanges between the two peoples, expand economic and trade cooperation, strengthen relations between the two militaries, enhance political mutual trust, safeguard peace and stability in the border areas, and intensify communication and coordination between the two countries in international and regional affairs.

Wang Yi conveyed President Xi Jinping's sincere greetings and best wishes to Ram Nath Kovind. Wang Yi said that China and India, as two ancient civilizations, have enormous space and great potential for people-to-people and cultural exchanges. At present, both countries are facing the mission of developing economy, improving people's livelihood and realizing national rejuvenation. China and India, with a population of 2.7 billion, are moving toward modernization, which will have a major and far-reaching impact on the future of mankind. A healthy and stable China-India relationship is in the interests of the two countries and the two peoples, and also conducive to the cause of world peace and development.

Wang Yi said, the Wuhan meeting between President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Narendra Modi this April has charted the course for the development of bilateral relations and opened up new prospects. Under the strategic guidance of leaders of the two countries, China-India relations have shown a momentum of comprehensive improvement and development, with constant high-level exchanges, accelerated exchanges in various fields and practical cooperation on a fast lane. My visit this time is to implement the consensus reached by leaders of the two countries, launch the China-India High-level People-to-People and Cultural Exchanges Mechanism and attend its first meeting. The exchange mechanism continues the tradition of exchanges and mutual learning between the two major civilizations, conforms to the aspiration of the two peoples to enhance exchanges and understanding, and meets the needs of the current all-round development of bilateral relations. We are ready to work with the Indian side to promote closer people-to-people and cultural exchanges between the two countries and consolidate the public opinion foundation for bilateral relations. In the face of the current international situation, China and India should also cement coordination in international affairs, jointly safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of both countries and developing countries, and contribute to global governance and serve as stabilizers of the international order.
