State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi Met with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif via Video Link
2020/06/24

On 24 June, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif via video link.

Wang noted that as comprehensive strategic partners, China and Iran have always understood and supported each other on major issues concerning their respective core interests, and have worked together for international equity and justice. Wang reaffirmed China’s readiness to carry forward this fine tradition with Iran, further enhance mutual trust and practical cooperation, and bring the bilateral relationship to a new level.

Wang commended the mutual support and assistance between the two countries since the start of COVID-19. Recognizing the impact of COVID-19 on their bilateral cooperation, Wang highlighted the resilience of the two countries and their ability to promote bilateral ties from a strategic perspective. Based on how COVID-19 evolves, China will explore feasible ways to gradually resume people-to-people exchanges and advance cooperation with Iran.

Wang pointed out that, at this critical moment of the global fight against COVID-19, certain countries have politicized the virus, attached a label to it and stigmatized other countries. Their goal is to shift the blame to other countries. What they have done will not help them fight the virus; worse still, they are holding back international cooperation against COVID-19 and, in fact, eroding their own international credibility. COVID-19 will eventually subside, and acts of unilateralism and bullying, unjustifiable in any form, will be abandoned by history.

Wang expressed China’s full support for the recent joint declaration on the promotion of international law issued by Iran and Russia. He expressed China’s readiness to work with Iran and the wider international community to firmly uphold the UN-centered international system, the international order underpinned by international law, multilateralism and the authority of the UN.

Zarif highlighted the mutual support and solidarity between Iran and China in the battle with COVID-19. The Iranian side welcomes China’s initiative of a “Silk Road for health” and is ready to participate in relevant cooperation. Zarif commended China’s strong support for the JCPOA and the Iran-Russia joint declaration on the promotion of international law. Iran firmly rejects the attempt by certain countries to exploit COVID-19 for politicization and stigmatization, and firmly opposes US interference in China’s internal affairs, including on Hong Kong. Zarif also expressed Iran’s readiness to work with China to chart the future course of their bilateral ties, facilitate travel by their business people, and advance their cooperation in various fields against all odds.

Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to the effectiveness of the JCPOA and the authority of the Security Council Resolution 2231, and made clear their objection to any attempt to undermine the JCPOA.
