Wang Yi Meets with Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs Boris Johnson of the UK
2017/09/21

On September 19, 2017 local time, Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs Boris Johnson of the UK during his attendance at the UN General Assembly in New York.

Wang Yi expressed that this year marks the 45th anniversary of the establishment of ambassadorial level diplomatic relations between China and the UK. Both countries should continuously endeavor hand in hand, maintain high-level exchanges, deepen practical cooperation, and promote the “Golden Era” of bilateral relations for in-depth development. China appreciates that the UK supports the Belt and Road Initiative. China and the UK should jointly uphold the multilateral trading system with WTO as the core, and send out a positive message of committing to building an open global economy and opposing protectionism. It is hoped the UK could create a sound environment for Chinese enterprises to invest in the UK.

Boris Johnson expressed that China is a major country with extensive international influence and the UK shares similar or same opinions with China on a series of important international issues, especially shares common stance and interests on promoting free trade and maintaining an open market. The UK attaches great importance to developing its relations with China and stands ready to enhance bilateral high-level exchanges and consolidate cooperation in various fields, so as to push forward the “Golden Era” of UK-China relations for constant development.

Both sides also exchanged views on the Korean Peninsula situation, the Afghan issue and other topics.
