Question: According to media reports, on 12 December, Foreign Secretary David Cameron met with Sebastien Lai, Jimmy Lai's son, and claimed that the UK opposes the National Security Law and will continue to stand by Jimmy Lai and the people of Hong Kong. What is your comment? Embassy Spokesperson: We firmly oppose UK politicians' emboldening of Jimmy Lai, one of the most notorious anti-China elements bent on destabilising Hong Kong, and strongly condemn the UK side's egregious interference in the rule of law in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of China. Jimmy Lai was a major plotter and instigator of the anti-China riots in Hong Kong. He blatantly colluded with external forces in jeopardising national security, solicited foreign support, and committed various sinful deeds. It is a just move for the Hong Kong SAR government to hold Jimmy Lai and the likes accountable in accordance with the law. The UK's backing of an anti-China, Hong Kong destabiliser who broke the law constitutes a flagrant interference in a case that has already entered judicial proceedings. This further exposed Jimmy Lai's long-term collusion with the UK side and the latter's connivance and support for anti-China activities aimed at disrupting Hong Kong. This further proves that the Hong Kong SAR government's prosecution of Jimmy Lai is entirely lawful, legitimate and justified. We solemnly demand that the UK respect the facts and the rule of law, stop meddling in Hong Kong-related affairs which are China's internal affairs, and refrain from going further down the wrong path.
