(Ambassador Liu Talking with the Leaders of the Conservative Party)

On July 1, 2010, Ambassador Liu Xiaoming hosted a lunch at the Chinese Embassy in honour of the leaders of the British Conservative Party. Attending the luncheon were Baroness Wilcox, the Parliamentary Secretary for Business, Innovation and Skills, Mr. Edward Llewellyn, the Chief of Staff to the Prime Minister, Lord Powell, the former CBBC Chairman, Peter Lilley MP, Geoffrey Clifton-Brown MP, Jacob Rees-Mogg MP and others.

In his remarks Ambassador Liu spoke highly of the contribution of the Conservative Party to the development of the China-UK relations and said that since the new British government was in place, the two countries had frequent high-level exchanges and the bilateral relations were in good shape and faced with new opportunities for further development. President Hu Jintao and Prime Minister David Cameron had a constructive meeting recently at the G20 Summit and reached important consensus on the further development of the relations between the two countries. China is ready to work with the new British government and the British Conservative Party to continuously push the China-UK relations forward.

The leaders of the Conservative Party agreed with the positive comment of the Ambassador on the China-UK relations. Baroness Wilcox said that China is an important partner of the UK and the two countries have growing exchanges and cooperation in extensive fields including business, technology and education. The new British government is ready to work with China to enhance the level of the bilateral relations. Mr. Llewellyn said that Prime Minister Cameron pays great attention to the relations with China, hopes to promote the further development of the bilateral relations and looks forward to a visit to China. Lord Powell proposed that both sides strengthen high-level communication and increase the exchange of visits between ministerial officials to give new impetus to the bilateral cooperation in all fields.

Ambassador Liu also answered questions on the China-UK business cooperation, climate change, RMB exchange rate, the situation on the Korean Peninsula and the participation of young Chinese in politics.
