On October 27, Ambassador Liu Xiaoming met Sir Leszek Borysiewicz, the new Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cambridge, at the Chinese Embassy. Minister Counsellor Tian Xiaogang of the Education Section and others also attended the meeting.

Ambassador Liu Congratulated Sir Borysiewicz on his appointment as the 345th vice-chancellor of the University of Cambridge, extended welcome to his visit to China for the closing ceremony of the Shanghai World Expo, wished the visit a complete success and hoped that he will personally experience the ever changing Shanghai and the rapidly developing China during this visit. Ambassador Liu spoke highly of what the University of Cambridge has done to facilitate China-UK educational cooperation and enhance the mutual understanding and friendship between the Chinese and British people. He hoped that the University of Cambridge will further expand its exchanges and cooperation with the higher learning institutions and research institutes in China, so as to make greater contribution to a better and more objective understanding of China among the British public and greater mutual understanding and friendship between the two peoples, particularly between the younger generations of the two countries. The Ambassador also expressed that the Chinese Embassy will continue to actively support the University of Cambridge in its cooperation and exchanges with China.

Sir Borysiewicz said that he very much looks forward to his visit to China, in particular the the closing ceremony of the Shanghai World Expo. As the new Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cambridge, he attaches great importance to the cooperation with China and will further promote the University's relations with higher learning institutions in China, so as to make full use of their respective resources to carry out more substantial cooperation and exchanges, and he hoped to receive continued assistance as necessary from the Chinese Embassy. Sir Borysiewicz also warmly invited Ambassador Liu to visit the University of Cambridge and deliver a speech to the faculty members and students, and the invitation was gladly accepted by the Ambassador.
