Tang Jiaxuan Meets with UN Special Envoy for Myanmar Issue Gambari
2007-10-25 00:00

On October 25, 2007, Chinese State Councilor Tang Jiaxuan met with Ibrahim Gambari, special envoy of United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in Ziguangge, Zhongnanhai.

During the meeting, Tang said China, as a neighbor of Myanmar, paid attention to the development of the situation in Myanmar and hoped to see a stable, developing, democratic and reconciled Myanmar. Tang said the Myanmar issue could only be properly settled by the Myanmar people and government with their own efforts through dialogue and consultations. The international community should provide constructive assistance to Myanmar instead of sanctions and pressure, said Tang. China would continue to support Ban and Gambari in their mediation work in this regard and support for the important role played by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), said Tang.

Gambari valued China's important role in properly handling this issue and thanked for China's support to Ban's mediation work, adding he would continue to make his own contributions to this end.
