Speech by Mr. Liu Peng, President of Chinese Olympic Committee and Minister of the General Administration of Sport of China, at the Victory Party for the Chinese Sports Delegation
2012-08-10 21:30

Ambassador Liu,

Representatives of Chinese companies in Britain, Chinese media in Britain, Chinese students and compatriots in Britain,

Ladies and gentlemen,

With the great expectations of our people, the Chinese sports delegation attended the 30th Summer Olympics in London. Our embassy in London made careful arrangements in all aspects and offered a strong leadership, a cordial guidance and enthusiastic assistance to the delegation. You developed and implemented a series of work plans and contingency plans, and ensured with considerate and comprehensive arrangements that our state leaders successfully attend the London Olympics. You provided strong support and full guarantee for the delegation. It is with your help that the delegation successfully built the China House, carried out foreign activities and ensured sound conditions for life and logistics. The Chinese-funded institutions and our compatriots also offered many helps. No matter in or outside the Olympic events, they cheered and warmly encouraged our athletes and did their best to help them. The Chinese Embassy is our home, and the Chinese-funded intuitions and the compatriots are our beloved ones. You embraced us with strong affection and kind encouragement. So in this occasion, on behalf of all the athletes, coaches and staff members of the Chinese sports delegation, I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude and pay high tribute to the Chinese Embassy, the Chinese-funded institutions and the compatriots.

The Chinese sports delegation for the London Olympics received great attention and care from the CPC Central Committee and the State Council. Before we set off, Mr. Li Changchun, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, Madame Liu Yandong, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and State Councilor, cordially received all the delegation members at the Great Hall of the People. They expressed ardent hopes and raised clear requirements to the delegation on its participation in London Olympics. On July 26, before the opening of the Olympics, State Councilor Dai Bingguo made a special trip to the Olympic Village and visited the delegation on behalf of President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao. Mr. Dai also watched the first match of the Chinese athletes on July 28. He conveyed the cordial greetings and earnest expectations of the CPC Central Committee and the State Council. On July 28, immediately after we won the first gold medal of the Olympic Games, Madame Liu Yandong sent a warm congratulatory message to the delegation. On July 29, Mr. Liu Qi, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, paid a special visit to the delegation in the Olympic Village. These are great incentives to all the athletes, coaches and staff members of the delegation and help us to keep high spirit in our fight for success.

Among the 621 members of our sports delegation, 396 are athletes. They compete in 212 events of 22 sports for China. So far, our athletes have won 36 gold medals, 22 silver medals and 19 bronze medals. They have reached the expected target with their painstaking efforts. Their excellent performance has attracted great attention back in China. People from all walks of the society have called to give us warm congratulations and encouragement. These achievements are inseparable from China’s rapid economic and social development in the past more than 30 years since the reform and opening up, inseparable from the strong support of all the Chinese people and the whole society, and inseparable from the great help of the Embassy in London, the Chinese-funded institutions and the compatriots in Britain. As the Olympic Games are not over yet, the delegation will spare no effort in striving to demonstrate both a strong athletic standard and the true Olympic spirit. We will win credit for China and the Chinese nation with our achievements and live up to the expectations of all the Chinese people and compatriots.

I wish the Chinese-funded institutions in Britain greater successes! I wish our compatriots a happy life and a prosperous career.

Thank you!
